Location and Establishment of Al Shaqab Stud:

Al Shaqab Stud lies just 15 kilometers from the Qatari capital of Doha, in the town of Al Rayyan, the site of one of the most important battles in Qatar's history. There, at the beginning of World War 1, the Turks were vanquished by Qatari warriors and driven from country. It is a fitting location for Al Shaqab Stud, established by His Highness Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani, Emir of Qatar. The site was chosen for its link to history and in memory of the Emir's ancestors. The area is rich in historical monuments and artifacts -- indeed, several architectural elements of the 400-acre Al Shaqab facility reflect Qatar's Islamic past. Many ancient buildings, including an old stable, have been restored in keeping with the Emir's keen interest in the preservation of Qatari heritage.

In July 2004 Al Shaqab came under the umbrella of the Qatar Foundation, which provides Al Shaqab with management and support services.
