On Thursday 23rd November 2006, we held our annual International Challenge Day. This is a special day when regular classes are cancelled for the day and all senior students are organised into mixed-grade teams representing different countries. This year we took the imminent Asian Games as our theme and were joined for the first time by the Primary School (whose students were organised into mixed grade teams competing in activities in the Primary school).
40 of the 45 Asian Games countries were represented and students took part in a series of Asian Games sporting activities which included familiar sports and others (such as Sepaktakraw) which were new to many of our students. The teams were also required to research their designated countries in advance, in order to prepare a presentation entitled "Why this country should be chosen as a future host for the Asian Games".
After spending the morning competing in the various challenges, all Qatar Academy students gathered for the closing ceremony on the VCU Field.
The ceremony began with the Qatari National Anthem. Dr. Kanan gave the Opening Address which was followed by a Karate Demonstration by students of The Learning Centre. Two senior school students and one primary school student who were to represent Qatar in the Asian games spoke about their experience and anticipation of the event. That was followed by the Primary School's "International Song" which was led by a group of primary students.
Winning teams were announced and medals were awarded to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd placed teams in the Senior School competition.
The event was brought to a close by a very entertaining tug-of-war competition between teachers of the Primary and Senior school which saw the Primary school victorious.
