How can I allow my parents to access information on my records (i.e. housing assignment, contact information, etc)?
We believe in preserving the privacy of each resident in Qatar Foundation housing. However, there may be times when you would like information to be easily accessed by your parents or guardian. The only time we share student information is if students give written or verbal instructions for specific individuals. As a rule, our department does not volunteer information about residents. If you would like to grant another person access to information about you from a Residence Life perspective (apartment phone number, apartment number, conduct information, etc) you may do so by filling out an authorization form which you may access by contacting housing@qf.org.qa
What if I have a medical condition and I want to live on campus? How would you know who to contact in case of an emergency?
Upon moving onto campus, Housing and Residence Life will require that you complete an Emergency Card to inform us of any medical conditions you may have. On the card, you must provide the full contact details of your parents or guardian in case of any emergencies. We also suggest that you share information about any medical conditions with your Residence Hall Director (RHD) so he/she is best prepared to assist you in an emergency. The more comfortable you are, in communicating with our professional staff members, the better we may effectively respond in the event of an emergency.
I am interested in living on campus year-round. Can you give me details on housing for summer and winter break periods?
Students who require on-campus housing during the break between the semesters and during the summer will pay a daily rate for housing. If you already occupied a room during the school year, you can remain in the room during the winter break. You may, however, need to move rooms during summer, depending on housing plans for the following academic year.
In order to have housing during these breaks, you must fill out either a Winter Break Housing Form or sign up for Summer Housing by a certain date. Contact housing@qf.org.qa for more details on break housing.
What are the `Community Living Standards' and how am I affected as a resident on campus?
The Community Living Standards (CLS) are the rules and regulations that govern community living in Qatar Foundation's Housing and Residence Life. The CLS include information on what students may have in their rooms, how they may decorate, safety and visitation policies as well as the Conflict Resolution Process if a student becomes involved with a conduct situation. You can learn more about the Community Living Standards here.
I am interested in leadership opportunities to develop my resume and personal skills-building. What sorts of opportunities exist for me in the residence halls?
Students have various options for leadership involvement such as Residence Hall Council and applying for Education City Leaders in Residence class taught every spring semester. Furthermore, all students that are in their second semester of study in Education City can apply to be a Community Development Advisor for the following academic year.
What appliances are allowed in the rooms?
It's probably easier to cover a list that is NOT permitted. Appliances such as (but not limited to) halogen lights, air conditioners, appliances with exposed heating elements (such as: toaster ovens, grills, hot plates, coffee makers, ""George Foreman" Grills), microwaves using more than 900 watts, crock pots, portable heaters, and electric blankets are not permitted. Refrigerators no larger than 2 cubic meters, one meter in height and 1.5 amps are allowed. If you have questions about a specific appliance you are considering purchasing, please contact your RHD directly or Housing and Residence Life at housing@qf.org.qa.
What kinds of activities and events can I get involved with while living in QF residence halls?
There are plenty of events for residents to take part in throughout the school year. Community Development Advisors and Residence Hall Council executive members offer many options throughout the year for residents to get involved as well as assisting residents to plan their own activities with other residents. Some examples of residence hall events have included a trip to the Old Souq, a nearby beach for some swim fun, Reverse Trick-or-Treat, Midnight Breakfast during finals, Welcome and Iftar Dinner and many more! Check out the current residence hall newsletter Swalif. Programs for resident students are highlighted in each newsletter.
Why didn't I get the roommate I requested?
Students who want to live together must ensure they make the same request with their applications. If the request is not mutual, you will not be placed together. Should you feel your request has not been treated fairly, please feel free to contact Housing and Residence Life. We will do our best change your roommate assignment.
My roommate and I are having some issues living together. What should I do?
Roommate conflicts are an inevitable part of life when people are living together. The good thing is Housing and Residence Life is here to help! Click Here for our resources on working through roommate conflicts for some thoughts on how you can help yourself by taking certain steps to work through the issues you are experiencing!
I am a new student to Education City. I'm not sure I want to live on campus. What should I do?
Students who are interested in living on campus must apply for housing and pay a non-refundable reservation fee of QR 1000 and a deposit fee of QR 2000 for damages. The QR 2000 is fully refundable upon leaving a room clean and without damage. Should you decide you do not want to live in the halls after completing this process, you must notify us so we can refund your damage deposit. If you strongly feel that you might want to live on campus, we encourage you to apply for housing as space is available on a first-come, first-served basis. If you would like to talk with someone about your concerns regarding living on campus, please email housing@qf.org.qa with an email and phone number with your questions and one of our professional staff members will contact you.
Do I have the option of only contracting for one term?
Yes, so long as you make this clear on your housing application. You may be contacted by Housing and Residence Life for additional information.
I don't like my room assignment. Is there any way I can change rooms?
If you want to change your room assignment, you need to contact your Residence Hall Director in person, by phone or email. For the first two weeks of each semester, there is a ban on room changes in order to be sure of the spaces available. This is no guarantee that a room change will happen. We are bound by the availability of space and the specific requests for the room change.
I am an incoming student to Education City. Can I request a particular roommate?
Students may request a specific roommate prior to receiving a room within the residence halls. To do this, you must include in an attached letter, the name and contact details of the person you are interested in rooming with, including their email and branch campus affiliation. Your preferred roommate MUST also do the same. This does NOT exempt you from filling out the Roommate Matching Form. Make sure to include this form. We will do our best to match roommates who have requested to share. Please be advised that our ability to fulfill your request will depend on the availability of space.
I am a returning resident to the halls. How does the lottery affect my chances of getting my preferred roommate?
If you and your preferred roommate wish to remain in a room one of you already occupies, you will need to ""squat the room"" during the night of the lottery process. If you would like to move into a different room with a specific person or people, you must all attend the open lottery night of the Housing Lottery. If one of the residents is unable to attend, they may send a written (and legible) note with a "proxy" who will be able to make room choices on their behalf. Please contact Housing and residence Life or your Residence Hall Director for more information.
